UFT President's Response to Bloomberg's Albany Comments

Bloomberg tells Albany that proposed budget cuts are unfair to city

Testifying before a joint budget committee of the New York State Legislature on Jan. 25, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that Gov. David Paterson’s proposed budget cuts were unfair and would be devastating to the city. He said the governor’s proposal would mean $1.3 billion in cuts to the city’s budget, including $500 million in education cuts, and result in 8,500 fewer teachers in the city school system.

UFT President Michael Mulgrew issued the following statement in response:

Mayor Bloomberg is right that the state’s budget problems have a real impact on the city, but his message ignores some important ways the city and the Department of Education could deal with the projected budget gap. A far-reaching retirement incentive for senior teachers could potentially save hundreds of millions of dollars; more oversight over the DOE’s no-bid contracts could save millions more, as could moving hundreds of teachers into permanent assignments who are now working in the ATR pool. We look forward to working with officials in Albany and New York City to minimize the effects of these proposed cuts on our classrooms, and to protect the interests of the city’s public school children
